Our new apes exhibit has finally opened!
The construction of the building and its four islands took 2 years and a half.
Orangutans, chimpanzees and gorillas now live in a 3 hectares complex located in the north part of the zoo, just behind the African plain gathering together impalas, wildebeests and Chapman zebras.
The building includes 4 large indoor enclosures separated by artificial rocks 4 metres high overhung with tropical plants and shrubs. Each indoor room includes a natural pine bark substrate, a water basin and apparatus that allow the evolution of animals at different levels. The public corridor offers a panoramic view on the inside enclosures through large windows with laminated glass 40 mm thick.
During the summer months, 4 islands of about 1000 square metres each will allow the visitors to observe the animals outside.
This new exhibit accommodates 17 animals: a group of 4 orangutans, a group of 2 gorillas, a group of 8 chimpanzees and a group of 3 gorillas.
The surface area of the zoo moved from 14 to 18 hectares. The former apes enclosures now accommodate new species or will be refurbished in the next few months: South American coatis took possession of the former gorilla pit, while yellow-breasted capuchins and chimpanzees awaiting for being sent to other zoos occupy the former apes building opening onto the lake. Finally the former orang building, which temporarily houses the lynxes, will be transformed in a bird nursery.
